U Comment, I Follow

The ‘nofollow’ tag is a piece of code implemented by Google in 2005 with the aim of combating spammers who were posting spam links at comments on blogs to increase their pageranks.

Pagerank is calculated in part by the number of links that there are from other sites to yours. When rel=”nofollow” is included in the link code Google ignores that link and doesn’t count it.

Bloggers all want to increase their own profile and bring more traffic to their sites. Search results from Google are a very important part of this. One way that bloggers can help each other is by removing the nofollow tag from their sites. This means that links in comments on their site will be indexed by Google and will benefit the commentator, at no expense to the original blogger.

All bloggers want to have people commenting on their sites. It’s needed to help build a community around a blog, which makes it worthwhile to keep the blog going. People who visit blogs often have blogs themselves and are more likely to comment when they know that it will benefit the search engine ranking for their own web-site to do so.

Two steps to spreading link love

1. Remove the ‘nofollow’

Removing nofollow can be done easily in Wordpress. There are several Wordpress plugins that you can use. I use ‘No Follow Free’ (michelem.org). For a list of other Wordpress plugins and also information on how to remove it from other platforms such as Moveable Type, Typepad and Blogspot try visiting andybeard.eu.

2. Let others know about it

Once you have the nofollow removed from your site you may as well let others know about it by displaying a logo. There are several to choose from:
